Integrated farming system
Integrated farming system (or integrated agriculture) is a commonly and broadly used word to explain a more integrated approach to farming as compared to monoculture approaches. IFS ensure that wastes from one form of agriculture become a resource for another form. Since it utilizes wastes as resources, we not only eliminate wastes but we also ensure overall increase in productivity for the whole agricultural systems. In Krishi Vigyan Kendra demonstration farm, IVRI, Bareilly having different integrated farming system(IFS) units:
1. Fish Duck Integrated Farming
2. Fish- poultry Integrated farming
3. Fish -Dairy Integrated Farming
4. Fish–Goatary Integrated Farming
Chicken raising for meat (broilers) or eggs (layers) can be integrated with fish culture to reduce costs on fertilizers and feeds in fish culture. Chicken can be raised over or adjacent to the ponds and the poultry excreta recycled to fertilize the fishponds .
Each bird requires 1.5 sq ft space (50 birds require 75 sq ft space). The house can be made of galvanized iron net roof covered with PVC sheet. Enough cross ventilation should be maintained to keep cool during hot days. Floor constructed with iron net , with 1 cm gap, to allow excrete to tall into pond, but not big enough for the chicken's feet to get caught in between and injured.
3. Fish -Dairy Integrated Farming
Fish-cum-Dairy Farming is considered as an excellent innovation for the use of organic wastes. The dairy shed constructed on the embankments of the fish farm .The outlet of the shed is connected to the pond so that the wastes can be drained into the pond.
Other then this pond dykes using for cultivation of fodder, Napier grass which are used as food for animals as well as grass carp, thus ultimately cutting down the production cost
Goat faeces dropping act as good organic manure which helps in production of different variety of phytoplankton & zooplankton in pond. Waste output in the form of urine and faeces varies considerably in quantity and quality (Urine comprising about 40% by weight of the total waste excretion per day).
In addition to this bund dykes was also utilized for raising fruits like banana, fig and many other crops including short duration vegetables. These crops not only add into production but save bund slops from soil and water erosion.
